Criminal involves some confusion of identity, but instead of being yet another 21st century action movie where the protagonist is unsure of who he is, this follows a character who knows he is basically two people at the same time. It’s a duality of self more commonly found in 1990s action movies than those of today.Costner plays Jericho, a convict so menacing he’s chained up by the neck inside his prison cell and so mentally stunted that he can’t open a childproof bottle of pills. Because of a childhood accident that left him with a huge vacancy in his cerebral cortex, he’s apparently the best candidate to be the guinea pig in an emergency memory transplant operation (the life’s work of a scientist played by Tommy Lee Jones) that’s never been done before with human patients.

The memories Criminal 2016 Jericho receives are those of Bill (Ryan Reynolds, doing his second memory transplant movie in as many years), a recently killed American spy based in London.It’s a matter of international security that the CIA (led by Gary Oldman) locate a rogue hacker (Michael Pitt) with a wormhole program that allows its user to launch any U.S.-owned nuke or cruise missile. And Bill was apparently the only one with knowledge of the guy’s whereabouts.If that sounds simple enough, just wait. The hacker isn’t a bad guy, but he used to work with the movie’s true villain, Hagbardaka Heimbahl (Jordi Molla), a terrorist described via onscreen caption as “Spanish anarchist,” which is the extent of his character development. Heimbahl also wants the wormhole program for nefarious reasons, so he first needs to go after Jericho. He also happens to be the person who killed Bill in the first place. Oops.
